As girls we are totally capable of completely imagining a whole slew of scenarios (a la Caitlin Moran in How To Be A Woman) and being violently emotional regarding them and while not a cure, avoidance is the best way to limit that and the emotional turmoil that results. Thus avoidance isn’t pathetic - it’s wise.
